Understanding freelance profit margins
Many freelancers mistakenly treat all incoming revenue as profit. Measuring true profitability requires separating direct delivery expenses from ongoing overhead and planned tax reserves.
- Gross Profit: Revenue minus direct project costs (freelance subcontractors, stock graphics, domains).
- Gross Margin: (Gross profit ÷ Revenue) × 100. Measures operational delivery efficiency.
- Operating Profit: Gross profit minus allocated business overhead (software, hardware amortization, utilities).
- Net Profit Margin: The percentage of top-line revenue that remains as actual take-home income after all costs and tax reserves.
- Markup vs. Margin: Markup is the percentage added to costs to determine price, whereas margin is the percentage of revenue that is profit.
