    How stacked discounts actually work

When a store advertises "25% off, plus an extra 10% off at checkout", retailers apply the second discount to the already-reduced price rather than adding 25% + 10% = 35%:

    • Start with a $100 jacket: 25% off lowers it to $75.00.
    • An extra 10% off applies to $75.00 (saving $7.50), bringing the final price to $67.50.
    • Your true combined discount is 32.5% off, not 35% off. Entering both percentages above shows the exact effective discount immediately.

Comparing BOGO vs. straight percentage sales

    • Buy 1, Get 1 Free (BOGO): Equivalent to 50% off per item—only if you actually need two items!
    • Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off: You pay 1.5× price for 2 items, which equals just 25% off per item.
    • Buy 2, Get 1 Free (3 for 2): Equivalent to 33.33% off per item across all three units.

    Frequently asked questions

Is sales tax calculated before or after a store discount?

For standard store markdowns and retailer promo codes, sales tax/VAT is calculated on the discounted sale price you actually pay, which is how this calculator computes tax.

How do I find the original price when I only see the sale tag and "% off"?

Switch to the "Reverse (Original / % Off)" tab and enter the sale price and discount percentage. Mathematically, Original Price = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount% ÷ 100).

    Why is "Buy 1 Get 1 50% Off" only a 25% discount?

On two $40 items ($80 regular value), the first costs $40 and the second costs $20, totaling $60. Saving $20 out of $80 is 20 ÷ 80 = 25% off overall.

Does the order of two percentage discounts change the final price?

No! Because multiplication is commutative, Price × 0.75 × 0.90 gives the exact same subtotal as Price × 0.90 × 0.75. However, a fixed cash coupon ($10 off) saves you more if applied after percentage discounts rather than before.

What happens if a flat coupon is larger than the discounted subtotal?

The calculator caps the subtotal at 0.00 so your receipt total never turns negative.

Can I switch currencies for non-USD shopping?

Yes. Choose USD, BDT, GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD, INR, or PKR from the Currency selector to format all figures cleanly.
