What is Unix epoch time?
Unix time (POSIX time) counts elapsed seconds since midnight Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on January 1, 1970, excluding leap seconds.
- Timezone-independent: A Unix timestamp represents the exact same instant globally regardless of local timezone or DST rules.
- Multi-precision logs: Databases, JWT tokens, and telemetry pipelines store epoch values in seconds (10 digits), milliseconds (13), microseconds (16), or nanoseconds (19).
- Pre-1970 support: Negative integers represent instants prior to January 1, 1970 UTC.
